Hello, I'm searching for a first to second cousin. All I know is on ancestry it only has the name of T.J. made by Laura Blinkly. He is in a Javins family tree. My family originated from WV, Ohio.. I have this thing I do with my big toes lol. Never looked at it as a hereditary thing. After reading that post I realized that it is a strong possibility that this is the T.J. I started searching for. Anyway if it is I would like to figure out where this relation comes from. I am trying to put together my family tree for my own children. If you can please let me know.

Research and Request re: Joseph Javins, born 1735.

My maiden name was Javins (from Boone County, WV) and I subscribed to Ancestry.com to research the name also.  The trail seems to end with Joseph Javins (1735-1760). He was the father of Daniel Javins (1760-1818), who was the father of Daniel Watts Javins (1812-1894), who was the father of Francis Marion Javins (1839-1916), who as the father of Daniel Winfred Javins (1881-1941), who was the father of Carl Javins (1906-1961). who was the father of MY father Larry Javins (1939-).  I couldn't find anything more through Ancestry.com however I did buy the DNA kit which said that I'm 41% Western European, 28% Irish, 17% Great Britain, 9% Scandinavian, and 5% other.  Of course, this includes my mother's DNA as well, but it gives me a little more information.  

Most people say the name is German, but I've also heard it might be Welsh. Honestly, I've always wondered if the name might be a derivative of the Polish name Javinsky or Javinski.  Many immigrants from Italy and other European countries dropped the ending letters of their name when they came to the US to disguise their ethnicity. 

If the name is German, I wonder if the name was spelled or pronounced differently in German.  The German consonant 'j' is almost always pronounced in the same manner as the English 'y' sound like in words such as 'yes', 'yellow' or 'yard'.  So in German, would it be pronounced Yahvins?  Yet when I type Javins into Google Translate it's pronounced Javinch (a "J" sound at the beginning with a "ch" sound at the end instead of the "s" sound). Have you discovered anything about the pronunciation of the name?

Not sure how reputable the website is, but according to HouseofNames.com the Javins surname comes from the Welsh personal name Evan. The original form of the name was Jevon, which then became Yevan and Ieuan before taking on its present form. Evan is a cognate of the personal name John. Supposedly, people could not specify how to spell their own names leaving the specific recording up to the individual scribe or priest. Those recorders would then spell the names as they heard them, causing many different variations. Later, many Welsh names were recorded in English. This transliteration process was extremely imprecise since the Brythonic Celtic language of the Welsh used many sounds the English language was not accustomed to. Finally, some variations occurred by the individual's design: a branch loyalty within a family, a religious adherence, or even patriotic affiliations were indicated by spelling variations of one's name. The Javins name over the years has been spelled Jeavon, Jeavons, Jevin, Jevan, Jevon, Jevons, Javin, Gevin, Gevinn, Ievan and many more.

Anyway, I seem to be getting stuck in the mid-1700s in Virginia/West Virginia, and I'm hoping you might have some ideas, information or resources you could provide. We've traced the line back as far as Joseph Javins, born circa 1735 and died approximately 1760 all in the Fairfax County area. I'm hitting a dead end as to who his parents were, where they came from, etc. About all we've found is a couple of mentions in George Washington's accounts for Mount Vernon.

I'm hoping you can maybe help fill in the blanks, or at least throw a clue that might spark some new lines of inquiry.

George William Javins died in 1958, preceded in death by his wife Pearley Rose Shaffier Javins who died in 1950.  They are buried in section D of Bethel Cemetery, Alexandria, Virginia.

A version of their family tree is on an older page as contributed by the Huffman family.

Donna Javins of Elkview, WV

Leanna writes: "My grandmothers maiden name was Javins. Her name was Donna Javins. She married my grandfather Gordon Billheimer Sr, who is still alive and will be 90 yrs old in June. They divorced I think in 1962 or 1963 or at least my mom told me she was 3 when they divorced. She then married again to a man named Paul Greco. She lived in Elkview, West Virginia. She passed away in 2007 2 days after Mothers day, I think. I was emailing you because I was curious to know more about this side of my family. I dont know much about the Javins side. I would like to know more if you might be able to tell me more."

Scott Taylor writes: Annie Primrose Javins was my grandmother and my Father's name is Gene Williams Taylor and we live in Georgetown Delaware. We are actually trying to find out who my Dad's father is or was. My dad never knew him and was never very close with his mother. Clyde Javins of McDowell County WV

My great-grandfather was a Javins. I don't know his first name but one of his daughter, Clyde, (yes, daughter!) was my grandmother. He was a rag-picker in around the coal camps of McDowell County WV. That's all I know except he was supposed to have been a real character and may have been born overseas as I recollect vaguely that he spoke with an accent.

My grandmother married Bill Vannoy. I had somehow assumed Javins, like my grandfather was of Dutch ancestry. I had always heard, included in the nationality ancestry, Scotch-Irish and I'm sure my great-grandfather Javins is the origin of this ancestry.

The Vannoys were originally Vannoise (sp?), French Hugeunots who left France for the Netherlands to escape religious persecution, there to become Vannoys. I think they then went to Scotland to help William of Orange take Ireland from the Irish before coming over here.

I love genealogy as you can tell, and wanted to give you another Javins out of the woodwork.

Pennsylvania Javens Family Question

I came across your guestbook and blog in my search to find some information on my maternal grandmother. Her name was Elizabeth Virginia Javens and she was born on 1/1/1937 in Beaver Falls, PA. She passed away on 10/20/2007 in Maryland. To my knowledge her parents relinquished her custody to the state and she was in foster care for a time. She married William Taylor Hyatt in Prince George's County, Maryland on 4/12/1958. They had 3 children (the eldest of which was a stillborn) in the 60's. They divorced somewhere between 1982 and 1985, but I think she kept the name Hyatt. Unfortunately that is where the trail runs dry for me. My mother did not know her maternal grandparents due to the circumstances of my grandmother's childhood. Do you possibly have any information on her?

Fredia Javins Stalder Christian, 78, of Millfield, passed from this life April 11, 2011 at her home after losing her battle with a short illness.
She is survived by her husband, James Robert Christian; two daughters, Sandra Frazier and Barbara Collins both of Amesville; three grandchildren- Charlotte John of Marietta, Lester Snodgrass, Jr. of Dayton and Elizabeth McPherson of Amesville; six great grandchildren- Joshua (Alisha) Tyler of Newport, Jason Tyler of Waterford, Kelly (Kyle) Griffins of Coolville, and Michael McPherson, Cheyanne McPherson & Christopher McPherson all of Stewart; five great, great grandchildren- Abigail Snodgrass (age 11), Zachary Snodgrass (age 9), Hayden Wood (age 6), Kalyn Tyler (age 5) and Payton Tyler (age 2); a brother, Carl Javins of Kansas City, Kansas; sisters in law and brothers in law- Gary Christian of Columbus, Jackie (George) Devault of Columbus, Joyce (Craig) White of Nelsonville, Tim (Marilyn) Christian, Janice Ruch of McComb and Lisa Christian of Chauncey.
Fredia was born April 24, 1932 in Ashford, WV, the daughter of the late Ira Javins and Norma Samson Javins. She lived in Ashford, WV until 1984.
Besides her parents, several brothers and sisters preceded her on her journey including: Edith Javins of Charleston, WV, Crinthia Loftis of Hershaw, WV, James Javins of Ashford, WV, Dillford Javins of Ashford, WV, Roscoe Javins of Ashford, WV, Genevieve Smith of Ashford, WV, Clifford Javins of Montgomery, WV, Chester Javins of Ashford, WV, Everett Javins of Ashford, WV, and Alford Javins of Racine, WV; also a brother in law, Roger Christian of Chauncey...
She will be laid to rest at The Plains Cemetery, Johnson Rd., The Plains, Ohio.

Today is the anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination so I'd like to share some lyrics of a song about it written by Odella Javins Byrd. Unfortunately I only remember a verse and a half. It's sung to the tune of "Philadelphia Lawyer" and starts out with "It was in Dallas, Texas. A place we all know well."

Here's the verse that has stayed in my mind for 40-something years:

"The car slowed down to round a curve
There was a rifle shot.
The bullet hit the president
In a very fatal spot."

Here's a source that may be useful for researching your family: Sorted by Name. I found some folks named Javens here and also some Javinses, who continue on the next page and so forth. West Virginia members of the Javins family are well represented.

Charles H. Javins, Merchant

I don't know Charles H. Javins, but here's his market in 1926.  It was at Washington's old Center Market, and is identified here as a seafood stand, but I think I see chickens as well as fish.

Postscript: I did a search for Charles and found that "John F. Javins and Francis H. Javins, copartners, trading under the name of Charles H. Javins & Son, Washington, D. C." were charged with adulteration of oysters in 1917.

Good morning, Linda Walcroft;

Well, I think that I am finally slowing down enough to try to write something that will not offend too many people when I say something about my part of the Javins Family. I have learned that there are some who will be miffed that I have said anything at all, but that is their problem now. In the past, they seemed to have a great difficulty in dealing with the truth, but that cannot be altered to suit their tastes, as much as they would like it to be.

At this point I do not know how long or detailed it will be. Only that it has begun. In looking at the information provided by others, I am sure that it will fit. At least I am able to provide corroboration of some of the information provided by others.

On the opening page of your web site, you mention that you have heard from one man in New Zealand. That is my Number One Son, Mark Alastair Javins, who has been living there since 1972, now with his mother Helene, his wife Vivienne, and their two sons, Grayson, and Mitchell. I think I can safely provide more information about them than I can about my family members who are here in the United States. I can say that just by my very existence, I will manage to offend some.

And, there are some things that I am still considering. Some of the information already provided is just calling for a rebuttal. I promise that I will be kind in my commentary if I give it. And, with you now having all of the proposed additional comments sent to you at your e-mail address, it is obvious that you could still exercise an editorial red pencil.

The Javins Family from McDowell County, Algoma, WV

My maternal grandmother was Hattie Clyde Javins, daughter of Andrew & Addie Perry Javins. Although I do not have her birth date, she was born in Algoma, WV in McDowell County. Hattie Clyde married Williams Jennings Vannoy,originally from Ashe County, NC, second son of Jesse Alexander Vannoy and Alva Jane Colvard Vannoy. They had six children: Vernon Vance, Mamie Louise, Katie Clyde, Billy Andrew, Curtis Eugene (Smokey), and Alma Carol.
